Converting salt water into drinking water

30/04: Can Nanotechnology Make Salt Water Drinkable?

At the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Kamalesh Sirkar is refining a desalination technique, called membrane separation, which has been in use for about 20 years. Membrane separation works as follows: hot salt water is passed through a thin sheet of material known as a membrane.

In the membrane there are tiny holes called nanopores. On the other side, there is a cold water tank. When vapor passes through the membrane, it condenses (turns back to liquid). The product obtained is purified and potable water.
